Autumn game hunting with stuffed animals and decoy duck
The majority of birds moving to wintering grounds, stopping periodically to feed safe waters, replenishing energy to continue the road. At this time, ducks have a highly developed flocking instinct, and many species are willing to fly up to the stuffed animals. Thanks to this, hunting with stuffed animals in the fall is much more productive than without them.
Hunting with stuffed animals
Most eager to be stuffed Teal, Pintail, grey duck, Lutak, pochard, respond less to them Mallard, shoveler, Wigeon, red-crested pochard.
For recreation, flying ducks often use large lakes, floodplains or open sea coasts. River ducks prefer shallow water reservoirs, diving ducks prefer deep water ones. However, large reservoirs often do not provide birds with food. Therefore, in the evening and the first hours of the night, the ducks fly to more stable places: small lakes and coastal shoals. Some of the river ducks, especially mallards, visit the fields where they feed on grain. With dawn, before sunrise, the birds leave the feeding grounds and fly for a day’s rest to safer reservoirs. Often in the evening, birds fly one way and return another.
In order to properly organize duck hunting with stuffed animals, it is advisable to first learn the ways of flying ducks from places of fattening to places of rest. However, this does not always have the time and often place to choose a pit directly before the hunt. Sometimes it is enough to follow the direction of movement of two or three packs to choose the right place for hunting. Especially effective is hunting on the site where the paths of birds flying from different sides intersect.
In windy weather, cloudy days, and light fog, duck flights are observed throughout the day, only subsiding at noon. Mass long-term flights are also observed during periods of cold snap and early snowfall. On such days, you can hunt for a long time, observe the places where the largest number of birds fly by, and arrange skradok in such places.
Place for a blind when hunting with stuffed birds and a duck decoy, as in the hunt for the sunrise, should be possible with a good view. Hunting with stuffed animals is carried out mainly during the day, so skradok should be built especially carefully. It should hide the hunter well, but not stand out from the surrounding vegetation. In contrast to the spring shelter, skradok is made with an open top, since it is necessary to shoot at flying ducks. For the device a pit sometimes you want a piece of twine for fastening the masking material.
In the blind should be a good prop for a good seat to not have numb feet. It is also important that the walls of the skradka do not restrict the movements of the shooter, and the shooting sector is at least 180°.
Rubber scarecrows are usually used as bait. However, sometimes they also use appropriately colored duck profiles made of tin or plywood. Most often planted stuffed mallards, the teals and silkwaste. A special selection of stuffed animals when hunting diving ducks is not required. Usually enough to put a dozen stuffed animals, but the number of them undoubtedly increases the effect of luring.
It is especially effective to attach captured ducks to stuffed animals, the natural color of which reduces the vigilance of cautious species (for example, mallards). The simplest method of planting extracted ducks is to prick them in the mandible on sticks of talus or reeds stuck in the soil of the reservoir. This method should be especially remembered if the hunter for some reason did not have stuffed animals.
Stuffed put at a distance of 15-20 m from the blind, flock, reminiscent of vacationers ducks. One or two stuffed animals are planted at a distance of about 40 m. these stuffed animals serve as a guide for determining the distance when shooting low-flying or hooked ducks.
Stuffed animals must be installed on a significant area of the water mirror so that they are clearly visible from a distance to flying ducks. In windy weather, stuffed animals should be placed on the leeward side of the hut, since ducks fly up to the scarecrows from the windward side.
Often, on relatively open reservoirs, the hunter finds himself in such a situation: the number of ducks goes somewhat away from the skradka, and it is not possible to move it there. In this case, if conditions allow, the stuffed animals should be moved slightly away from the skradka, opposite the line of flight of the ducks. In this case, the birds usually slightly change the direction of flight to see the flock sitting on the water, approach the skradka and find themselves at a killing distance.
Sometimes, simultaneously with the stuffed animals, a decoy duck is used, which with its cries enhances the illusion of a live flock. The duck should be planted away from the stuffed animals, so that it does not get entangled among them with a leash. They also plant two decoys or a decoy duck with a Drake from different sides of the hut, so that the birds do not see each other and shout more excitedly. In windy weather, the effect of the decoy duck disappears, since its calls are not heard.
Hunt with stuffed animals and from a boat, if the depth of the reservoir does not allow you to build skradok. The boat is carefully masked by vegetation.
On a reservoir devoid of surface vegetation, instead of the usual skradka on the shore near the water, dig a hole, the edges of which are masked with grass or small bushes. Excess land is thrown into the water. Such sit-ins are especially good on braids that extend far into the Bay or lake. In very wet places with subsurface water, a barrel is dug into the hole, in which the hunter is waiting for ducks.
For shooting ducks from a blind using the same numbers of fractions, as with other autumn hunting. In case of a possible encounter with geese, you need to have in stock cartridges with larger shot.
Wounded, fallen into the water, should finish immediately not leaving a pit.
