Hunting for a hare in the fall without a dog
Encyclopedia of hunting: hare Hunting
Many people will think that there is nothing complicated, go through the fields and shoot the flying “oblique”. But there are secrets, and it is because of these secrets that I almost always come home with the loot. For various reasons, not everyone has the opportunity to hunt with a dog, but this does not mean that hunting hares is not available to them. There are several quite effective ways to hunt without having a specially trained hunting dog.
Hunting from the approach
The very first way is to hunt from the approach. Usually it is held before the snow falls or after the first snow, as in this video. Only three conditions are necessary for success:
Sufficient number of hares in relatively open areas (fields, meadows)
Knowledge of places where they can lie down for a day, or knowledge of habits
Strong legs of the hunter, because you have to walk up to 30 kilometers, or even more
In places where the hare is not enough, hunting from the approach is a hopeless walk on the grounds. In places with poor visibility (forest, high grass, bushes), if there are a lot of hares, nothing good will happen: we just do not notice how the hares carefully rise from the day and quietly leave.
Hares, leaving for a day’s rest, will not lie down everywhere, but are arranged only where they themselves will be well hidden, and any danger can be noticed in advance. The edges of ditches with high grass in the middle of the field, “flaws” in the field, not touched when plowing areas near large stones, around Telegraph poles or supports of high-voltage lines, bushes in the middle of the field, on large cuttings. These may be piles of firewood or the tops of fallen or felled trees — these are the towns that they choose for a day’s rest.
Of course, not every of the above shelters is a hare. Almost all of them are empty, and only one in a hundred lies the one we want to find. That is why hunting from the approach is always based on endurance. You need to walk off-road (arable land, cluttered cuttings, hummocks), and even with a large number of hares, you usually need to go a lot before you see a slant.
You need to walk slowly, all the time looking at the surrounding environment, make transitions from one promising place to another, go always ready to shoot, the hare will appear at any time, and usually at the most inappropriate (nose itched, we talk to someone). As a rule, the hare will be either far away, or fly right out from under your feet, and then you have to shoot at it almost instantly. Actually, the constant expectation of the appearance of prey and a lot of emergency situations always keep this hunt in constant tension.
For hunting, it is better to choose the so-called “easy to climb” days when the sun will Shine, there will be windless weather and there will be a slight frost, then the hare will rise more willingly. In places where it is constantly hunted, it will rise far, allowing it to approach only in inclement weather. In the latter case, the hare can literally jump out from under your feet.
Secrets of hunting a hare from the approach
Prey for the hunter is also hours when drops fall loudly from wet branches after a rain. Hares do not like drops very much and for this reason leave their favorite thickets, trying to get to the edges, fields and glades adjacent to the forest. In this weather, they lie down in the open, which helps them find and conduct a more accurate, unhurried shot. If in this situation, the hare rose from under your feet and around a fairly clean place, do not shoot immediately. Imagine that you smoke, and before the shot you want to throw out a cigarette, usually, this time is enough for the hare to run away for 20-30 meters, the most lethal distance.
I’ll tell you another little secret that helps me come home with the loot more often than my friends. It seems that we go to the same places, but they are empty, and I have one or two hares. The thing is that with such a hunt, everyone purposefully goes to some distant point. A hare, seeing a person who is walking close, but passes by him, will lie down. After walking 30-60 meters, I stop for 3-5 seconds. Seeing that the person stopped, the hare is undermined immediately, because he thinks that he was noticed and therefore stopped. A small trick, but as practice shows, it works.
Hunting by tracking
Another way to take a hare without a hunting dog is to hunt a trail. This type of hunting is reduced to finding a fresh trail, then it remains to follow it to the maturation and pick it up. You need more or less open areas of land and good endurance. However, another important condition for successful hunting is the ability to understand all the subtleties and intricacies of hare tracks. The number of animals may not be high, but hares run a lot during the night, and therefore it is not difficult to find a trace.
You only need to trail the morning, well, or at least the night trail, when the hare went from the maturation to fattening. In order to distinguish such traces, you need a little skill. And to track down “your” trail from hundreds of others left earlier, you already need experience. Therefore, most often they go out to hunt after a light storm, especially when the snow has stopped going for 3-4 hours in the morning. All traces are fresh and clearly visible.
Hare tracks are most often found on the edge of winter crops, along village houses in vegetable gardens, in the garden of fruit trees, along roads along the field. When you find a trail, an interesting and exciting process of walking on it begins. The hare always, and especially before the morning, going to the place of the day, embarks on all sorts of tricks — to confuse the trail. Makes “shifts”, goes to a certain place and returns in its Wake, then makes sharp and long jumps sideways. Can make a ring when the trail leads to its own trail.
The figure shows: 1-shift, 2-smetka, 3-loop, 4-lezhka.
As practice shows, usually the hare obfuscates its tracks twice. The first time a large and confusing maze is created, then it moves away from this place and confuses the tracks again. It is after the second maze that he usually goes to lie down, lying down next to him. To get away in time for you to unravel the tracks. If the maze is very confusing, make a circle with a diameter of 500 meters, and you should stumble on the exit trail, if it is not, then carefully begin to comb the places where the hare can lie.
