How to catch up with waterfowl on the hunt
The method of catching waterfowl is not used too often. However, this method is quite justified, and in some cases it is the only way to get a bird. For example, if the game is located on a remote and inaccessible part of the reservoir or swims in open water beyond the distance of the shot, only the driver can not be left without a trophy. This technique has its own characteristics, but if all the rules are observed, the hunt can become more productive at times.
If the bird is constantly kept far from the shore, sitting on it without catching up requires a very long time. But even long hours spent in hiding do not guarantee a successful end to the hunt.Catching game in this case resolves tedious and often unjustified uncertainty. The goal of the catch – up is not only to bring the birds closer to the arrow that is hiding near the shore support, but also to fit the bird from neighboring sections of the same reservoir or even neighboring it.
The main principle of hunting for a horse
Hunting for waterfowl in the open implies two things. First, it is catching up with a bird in plain sight, forcing it to approach the shooter, who is hiding on the Bank, without lifting on the wing. Secondly, this is a catch-up to the birds from the neighboring areas of the reservoir. Most often, the bird is caught up to the stuffed animals, which can be much bolder to sit ducks flying by. Also, other types of waterfowl can get hooked on scarecrows.
In any of the two methods, regardless of the presence of stuffed animals, you must choose the most secluded corner for hunting. This place should be constantly visited by waterfowl, common in the area. Hunting with a horse is not performed alone, but in two or three. While one of the hunters is hiding in a Crouch, others perform the role of beaters of game. Depending on the number of birds, you can change the balance of forces – one shooter, two beaters, or several shooters in ambush and one beater.
On large and medium-sized reservoirs, beaters will need boats.
Without them, you can only hunt on a small pond, when the bird can be adjusted from the opposite Bank. However, only a bird that floats openly in plain view is adjusted this way. This method is not always effective, since the flock, seeing a person, can simply take off and fly away. The technique of catching waterfowl is not as simple as it may seem initially.
Proper sitting is half the success
The place of the reservoir in which it is planned to arrange a sit-down should be actively visited by waterfowl. The hunter should pay attention to the surface of the water – you can always see such areas where birds are most often. They come most often from the opposite: if there are no crushed, parted algae on the site, feathers and down scattered on the water – it is not worth building a sit-down here. A sharp-eyed hunter always correctly guesses where it is best to arrange a shelter so that the hunt does not turn out to be “empty”.
Often, ducks are afraid to swim to a certain section of the reservoir, while a hundred meters further they keep constantly. Some factors frighten and alarm the bird. For example, excessively dense thickets of trees and bushes along the banks, dark spots of trunks on the water, stumps or dark spots in the coastal thickets scare off waterfowl. It doesn’t make sense to build a sit-down in this place. The hunter, sitting in it, will only perplexedly observe the ducks sitting nearby, but stubbornly not approaching the distance of the shot. It seems as if the birds see the hunter, but they don’t. They may not be able to see a person, but they may not be able to swim closer than two hundred meters to the shore.
Not any with the bird lands on the water near the blind. Individual individuals, not intending to sit down, fly at a close, but insufficient distance for the shot from the sit-down. It is important for the shooter to choose such a place for the shelter device, so that it is convenient for shooting at sitting and flying ducks, but it is also reliably shielded from duck eyes. Helps in this case, protective clothing, sheathed with tufts of grass growing along the banks of the reservoir.
Game catching technique
Catching waterfowl without lifting on the wing requires hunters to be particularly careful and quiet races. You need to silently and smoothly approach and move away from the flock, anticipating the intentions of birds by their behavior. In General, the beater’s maneuvers are similar to those that are performed when bustards and black grouses are caught up with scarecrows. Sometimes it is possible to bring even pressure-resistant swans closer to the shot by overtaking them. Catching a bird with a rise on the wing is somewhat easier. The driver will only need to know in which part of the reservoir you can find ducks and other waterfowl, as well as where they can move during the pumping.
Diving ducks have their own peculiarity – they prefer to dive when they see danger. Swimming under water, they are removed at a fairly large distance from the driver, and the direction of their movement is sometimes impossible to predict. When these birds dive in search of food, they rarely swim under water, surfacing in the same place where they submerged. This behavior can be a problem during the catch-up, but sometimes it is possible to adjust the dive to the sit-down quite quickly. In General, with the correct organization of the process, hunting for a horse gives good results. It makes sense to hunt like this only in the first half of autumn – before the beginning of winter, hunting with a horse is ineffective.
